0 Fractionalized Phase in an XY − Z 2 Gauge Model

چکیده
We study a model with fractional quantum numbers using Monte Carlo techniques. The model is composed of bosons interacting though a Z 2 gauge field. We find that the system has three phases: a phase in which the bosons are confined, a fractionalized phase in which the bosons are deconfined, and a phase in which the bosons are condensed. The deconfined phase has a " topological " order due to the degeneracy in the ground state of the gauge field. We discuss an experimental test proposed by Senthil and Fisher that uses the topological order to determine the existence of a deconfined, fractionalized phase.

Groundstates of certain materials can support exotic excitations with a charge that’s a fraction of the fundamental electron charge. The condensation of these fractionalized particles has been predicted to drive novel quantum phase transitions, which haven’t yet been observed in realistic systems. Through numerical and theoretical analysis of a physical model of interacting lattice bosons, we e...

In spatial dimensions d ≥ 2, Kondo lattice models of conduction and local moment electrons can exhibit a fractionalized, non-magnetic state (FL∗) with a Fermi surface of sharp electron-like quasiparticles, enclosing a volume quantized by (ρa − 1)(mod 2), with ρa the mean number of all electrons per unit cell of the ground state. Such states have fractionalized excitations linked to the deconfin...

As stated in the previous section, thermal excitation of Goldstone modes destroys spontaneous order in two dimensional models with a broken continuous symmetry. The RG study of the non-linear σ-model confirms that the transition temperature of n-component spins vanishes as T ∗ = 2πǫ/(n − 2) for ǫ = (d − 2) → 0. However, the same RG procedure appears to suggest a different behavior for n = 2. Th...

I present a pedagogical survey of a variety of quantum phases of the Hubbard model. The honeycomb lattice model has a conformal field theory connecting the semi-metal to the insulator with Néel order. States with fractionalized excitations are linked to the deconfined phases of gauge theories. I also consider the confining phases of such gauge theories, and show how Berry phases of monopoles in...
